What is a good reason to decide for tongue piercing? A wish for sexy jewellery and a daring ornament for wild kisses? Maybe.

Tongue piercing is not only the trend of the modern age. It originates from the traditions of the Aztecs and the Maya. Nowadays it has another meaning, of course. It is – equally as piercing of ears, lips, eyebrows, nipples and the genitalia – a part of fashion trends which are often hard to resist. Today, the focus will be on the piecing of the tongue.

Many people who have their tongue pierced, or the people who have kissed a person with a piercing on this erotic part of the body, report enjoying stimulating, thrilling and unique kisses as well as oral sex on a completely another level. Many people simply find a tongue piercing beautiful, daring, and something special. Whatever the reason for tongue piercing, it is good to be familiar with the hazards and methods of taking care of the wound after having the piercing done.

Potential health problems

If your tongue piercing is done unprofessionally, you can have several problems. Along with potential milder and severer inflammations, infections and allergic reactions, there is the danger of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection (this virus causes serious liver damage – you can read more about it in the Health and Sex section), as well as hepatitis C, D and G infections. If instruments are not sterilised, you can also get HIV and tetanus infections.

Potential blood poisoning, toxic shock and severe swelling of the tongue are also dangerous and unpleasant, though unlikely risks. Although it sounds unusual – you can also suffocate on a piece of jewellery, lose or chip a tooth (this happens to 14% of people who have a tongue piercing) and you can also have problems with speech. Research conducted in Israel, which included 400 participants aged 20 on average, established that every fourth person with a piercing in the lip or tongue has certain problems, for example, gum bleeding. Some of these diseases and problems can appear after it seems that the tongue has healed nicely.

It is vitally important, due to the above mentioned facts, that – in case you decide for a tongue piercing – you have it done in a professional piercing salon. Do not feel bad about spending a little more money. Let us now look at how piercing should be done in a professional salon.

How should tongue piercing be done?

If you are thinking of getting a tongue piercing, first ask in the salon which procedures they use to prevent the spread of infections. The part of the skin you want to pierce must always be disinfected, as well as the room, and sterile instrument and sterile gloves have to be used in the procedure. Piercing instruments always have to be used only once (and then sterilised). It is important that the person performing piercing is qualified for doing that.

How to take care of the wound?

When you get a tongue piercing, you have to avoid using mouth water, alcohol, hot drinks and spicy food until the wound heals. This usually lasts for 3 weeks. To maintain the area as clean as possible, use antiseptic, alcohol free, mouth water 2 to 4 times a day. Likewise, avoid kissing and unprotected oral sex for the healing period. You should also completely avoid alcohol as it accelerates potential bleeding. Likewise, do not use topical antibiotic creams for tending the wound, because they prevent access of oxygen to the wound and thus healing. The jewelry needs to be replaced for a shorter piece within 10 days.

Just as with any other piercing, infections can occur. (jlp)

How to recognize the signs of infection?

Even if you are taking proper care, this can often result in complications. The signs of infection are a red ring around the place of piercing, a burning sensation in the place of piercing and in the vicinity of the hole, or a great pain when touched, which does not ease in time. If you identify any of the signs, immediately visit your physician or a professional piercing studio where they have a lot of information about any possible complications. Milder infections are not difficult to treat by modern medications, but we need caution.

If you want to abandon the piercing

After removal of the jewelry, the healing process of the hole will take some time – also because you move the tongue around all the time and thus slow the healing process. The hole makes the tongue more susceptible to bacteria and virus infections, as well as some other diseases. It is therefore recommended to ask about proper care - consult a physician or an expert in a professional salon.
