Spontaneous abortion is an unwanted interruption of pregnancy before 24 weeks of pregnancy when the fetus is lighter than 500g. An interruption of pregnancy presents a great risk for the couple because a lot of questions need to be answered. Each pregnant woman is supposed to follow a few rules which can help her to prevent the tragedy.
Reasons for a spontaneous abortion
Reasons for a spontaneous abortion are mostly unknown. When the spontaneous abortion occurs there is usually a certain irregularity in the development of the fetus and the organism then secretes it and thus performs a natural selection. Even though it may sound tragic, some people understand it as a natural factor which prevents the birth of a baby with a genetic mistake. Many women are not aware of their pregnancy and experience a spontaneous abortion as a late period.
A disease of a mother can greatly affect the pregnancy. The most critical of all is diabetes. Lupus, polycystic ovary and high blood pressure also present a great risk for a spontaneous abortion. In the early stages of pregnancy a cardiac arrest because of the thrombophilia of the mother can also occur.
Many pregnant women have an unjustified fear of abortion. Spontaneous abortion occurs only in 0,3 percent of all pregnancy cases, but with 1 percent of women it occurs also with the second pregnancy. A woman should not live in constant fear of spontaneous abortion and she should definitely not feel guilty. In most cases a pregnant woman cannot prevent an abortion but she can still try from making it happen.
How to prevent a spontaneous abortion?
A pregnant woman has to quit smoking because it increases the possibility of abortion. The danger of abortion increases with every cigarette. Passive smoking is also critical but one cup of coffee a day does no harm. Consuming alcohol every day increases the danger of spontaneous abortion by three times.
Gases like arsenic, formaldehyde and ethylene dioxide are also dangerous. X-ray examination is therefore not performed during pregnancy. Medications are not allowed to be taken according to one's own judgment but there are also women who do not take the prescribed medications because of the fear of spontaneous abortion. This kind of action is completely wrong because uncured diseases can put the life of the unborn baby at risk.
What do you have to be careful about during pregnancy?
When it comes to exercise, a pregnant woman has to avoid sports where she can easily fall. An unborn child can also be damaged in a car accident so it is necessary to correctly adjust the seat belt. Most of all, a pregnant woman has to avoid physical strain and stress. Many pregnant women experience fear because of daily medical checkups. In this case the fear is not based on solid ground because the checkups are not performed because of irregularities but with every healthy pregnant woman.
Women who suffer from chronic diseases like diabetes have to plan pregnancy and consult with the doctor first. Some women also experience immune related miscarriage where antibodies recognize the fetus as a foreign body and attack it. Treatment of this kind of spontaneous miscarriage is unfortunately not very successful. One of the key factors for preventing the spontaneous abortion is definitely resting, constant support of the partner and a positive attitude to life.
