Anal intercourse has not been a taboo and rarity for a long time: it is practiced by a quarter of sexually active women and same-sex oriented men (4 -13% of all men). Of course, you can also contract sexually transmitted infections in this form of sexual intercourse, for instance: anogenital warts – condylomata acuminata, rectal inflammation - chlamydial proctitis and rectal gonorrhoea, inflammation of the mucosa of the anus due to herpes simplex virus infection, fungal infections of the anus and anal canal, so you should be especially careful to have proper protection!

How to have anal intercourse safely?

Here foreplay is of great importance because it carries the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections. For this reason, you have to be very careful already when you kiss, lubricate the anus with saliva and rub your penis, as in this way you apply preseminal fluid around the anal opening. The fluid can also be transmitted to the anal opening upon penetration with the penis protected by a condom.

You therefore apply a lubricant into the anal canal with your finger and gently massage it. It is not recommended that you use ordinary creams or oils because they can cause permeability of a condom. It is best if you use a water-based lubricant based (e.g. K-Y lubricating jelly).

Can sexually transmitted infections be treated?

Yes, most infections. Sooner they  are detected, easier it is to treat them. In others, such as HIV infection, timely treatment can extend survival, postpone the disease, reduce the possibility of spreading the disease and improve the quality of life.

Are there any other complications?

Maybe. You may notice blood stains after anal intercourse. These usually appear due to stimulation of the internal haemorrhoids, and it is also possible that there is a wound. In that case, pain appears during excrement. If you do not feel any pain after excrement, you can stay clam. It is not very likely that the sphincter muscles would be torn during a rather gentle anal intercourse. In any case, you should start anal intercourse very slowly, gently and with a lot of lubricant. If the partner hurts too much, it is better you stop and try it again later when she will be mentally ready for it.

Where to seek help?

If you notice any changes to the anus, anal canal, head of the penis, testes, inner side of thighs, vaginal lips, vagina or mouth, you have to see your physician immediately  to refer you to the dermotovenerological clinic where tests for sexually transmitted infections are performed. These are also necessary for all the men who practice sex with same-sex partners or men and women who are not sexually active solely with one partner.
