Ingrown hair is not necessarily the result of depilation

Not only women have to deal with the problem of ingrown hair, because the problem does not occur only as a result of depilation. Men are also familiar with ingrown hair on the parts of the body where they never removed their hair. An ingrown hair is a hair which curls back or grows back into the skin. Instead of growing through the skin surface, it gets stuck underneath and a little bump forms in the spot which causes irritation. In the worst of cases, an ingrown hair can cause a lot of pain and even starts to fester, which often leads to a visit to a doctor or even a surgeon. Of course, you can also prevent ingrown hair by a proper way of shaving, use of peeling and certain lotions (which include salicylic acid). If you spot an ingrown hair despite all the preventive care, you have a real challenge in front of you.

How to deal with ingrown hair?

1. Step: Make a peeling

Make a peeling of the affected area twice a day. This will remove the dead skin on the surface which prevents the ingrown hair from growing properly. A part of hair will eventually appear on the surface which will allow you to pull it out. It is best if you use different moves during the peeling. You can also use the so-called massage glove for a peeling.

2. Step: Soften your skin with a warm compress

If you put a warm compress on the area of the ingrown hair, for example a towel soaked in hot water, the skin and hair will become soft and the hair will come to the surface or at least come near the surface, and you will be able to pull it out. In case you have left the compress on for more minutes and the hair is still nowhere to be seen, then you will need to use the appropriate 'tool' or the help of a cosmetician. You can also use products which contain AHA (alpha hydroxy acid). These products can be a bit aggressive because they dry the skin and some of the don't smell really nicely. Ask your cosmetician about the use of such products.

3. step: Sterile needle and pincers

When a part of the hair starts sticking out, you can use a sterile needle or pincers to gently pull it out. If the hair is very thin and curled, gently grab it with pincers, straighten it and then pull it out. Be careful not to cause damage to the skin.

4.step: Take care of the 'affected' area

A swollen skin which occurs as a consequence of ingrown hair, can be tended to in such a way as pickles. Products with salicylic acid remove the redness very fast which offers the hair more space to break to the surface. When you remove the hair you can apply some disinfectant to prevent the area from getting infected. You can also apply aloe vera and wear comfortable cotton underwear, in case you have problems with ingrown hair in the pubic area. To avoid constant problems with ingrown hair, regularly use peeling and an appropriate moisturizer.
