Sadism is a personality disorder
Sadism is a personality disorder which, as any other personality disorder, has various types and degrees. The term itself is derived from the famous Marquis de Sade, who described all sorts of horrors in his literary works. Sadism is connected with sexuality, however, this personality disorder has no direct connection with sexuality. A sadistic person represents one end of a stick and on the other one there is a personality with a strong will and a domineering and self-confident character. Such people can be found in top positions, in management, and the characteristics themselves are not controversial; sometimes they are even desired and appreciated. All the different types of sadistic personalities have some significant points in common.
Sadistic ways of expression
They use psychological and physical violence to achieve dominance in a relationship. They like to humiliate people in front of witnesses. If they have the position of power, they make threats or use too violent methods to discipline people. They are amused by, or take pleasure in, the pain and suffering of others, including animals. They tell lies to inflict pain to others. They drag out of people anything they want by threatening and frightening them. They like to restrict the autonomy of people with whom they are in a relationship (severe restrictions for children, jealousy). They are fascinated by violence, weapons, marshal arts, injuries and torture.
Sadism in sexuality
Sexuality is just another way of establishing dominance. Complete power over a person through sexual intercourse is an ideal environment for a sadist. This does not mean games which include a little pain or the game of relationships where one of the partners plays the role of a domineering person. This is a disorder because one of the partners actually enjoys inflicting pain to the other one and seeks for it and is satisfied by it. A sadist does not feel or understand the emotions of other people and thus s/he is capable of watching and inflicting the most horrible pain, injuries, rape, torture, and even murder. All the pain s/he causes fills them with the feeling of superiority, a God-like feeling, when s/he controls another person and decides on life and death. Sadists are completely focused on themselves and are prepared to do anything to achieve their goals.
