China's fight with HIV - The statistics
Based on the Chinese Ministry of Health’s data, the number of people infected with the HIV virus drastically increased in the last two years. According to this data, 600.000 people were infected in 2006, and more than 700.000 in 2007. What also worries them is the 25% increase of syphilis infections between the years 2006 and 2007. Ministry of Health did not issue any information on other sexually transmitted diseases.
Lack of sex education is to blame for the China's HIV epidemic
People are unfamiliar with sexually transmitted diseases because of the lack of sex education and this is the biggest reason for this increase. The UN asked the Chinese government to implement sex education in their schools, otherwise the number of HIV infected people will rise to over 10 million.
The current number, offered by the Ministry, is probably incorrect. In reality, the numbers are surely higher. You should know that there is no data for the regions where poverty reigns. The government already took some steps, advertising condoms and building ‘control centres’ in poor areas where HIV testing is going to take place twice a year.
