Naked Olympic Games
The traditional naked Olympic games took place until 2007 at the Maslin Beach Bay, the first Australian nudist beach, which is situated a few kilometers out of Adelaide city. Then the naked games ran out of volunteers and the organizers were forced to cancel the event. They even launched a Facebook campaign last year to get new participants for the Naked Olympic Games in 2010 but the idea failed.
The naked games in the Basque region
Every September you can take part in a marathon at the Barinatxe beach between the Basque villages of Sopelana and Getxo, near Bilbao. If you want to participate at the marathon, you are allowed to wear only a headgear, sunglasses, socks and trainers.
Naked byclists
The naked cycling event dates back to 2001 and the city of Zaragoza, Spain. In recent years the event has gained popularity in Great Britain. The naked gathering is a peaceful, liberal and fun protest of cyclists and roller-skaters whose aim is to warn about the dangers of cycling in the city traffic. By cycling around naked and with painted bodies they also promote the strength and individuality of a human body. In 2009, three thousand cyclists participated in naked games in Great Britain alone and the influence spread across the Europe and to the US.
Hadaka Matsuri – The Japanese nudist festival
The most famous nudist festival takes place in the spring in front of a temple Sadaiji in the city of Okayama. It is visited by thousands of men dressed in traditional undergarment fundoshi. They traditionally drink sake and pour cold water over each other in order to metaphorically cleanse their bodies. It must be emphasized that the festival has 500 hundrer years of tradition and that the customs have mostly remained the same throughout the years. The undergarment of men also has a traditional, almost sacral meaning. Besides the festival in Okayama, there are also other naked festivals in Japan. They are mostly visited by men, even though the Western Japanese culture has a festival for women, hadaka matsuri. Some cities and towns have developed a different kind of naked games - sumo wrestling for women.
