Skin color is important. Maybe we came to an agreement at a social level that it should not be. However, life shows a different picture. When it comes to sexuality race bias is evident in many cases. Sexuality and emotions are often insensitive to social agreement. Sometimes it seems that sexuality exists according to its own rules, and we only think that the society does not and cannot touch it despite numerous laws governing our intimacy.
What is sexual racism?
Sexuality is also the area where sexual racism is practiced. Sexual racism is represented by all the statements in which people tend to exclusively admire another race, for instance: “Asian women are the best” or “black men really have
large ones”; or statements in which people despise other people and exclude the possibility of having sexual intercourse with people of another race: “white women are not good in bed”. Sexual racism is present in both cases – contempt or admiration only on the basis of another person’s skin color is considered sexual racism.
Sexual racism is the result of stereotypes
All these statements are the result of stereotypical beliefs. People who make them have not even been near an Asian woman or a black man. Lack of knowledge is the basis for sexual racism. Many people who do not consider themselves racists, who are actually strongly against racism, can have very racist ideas and opinions when it comes to sexuality. This clearly shows that sexuality is in the core of our mentality where sometimes there is no room for reason, and we cannot control it, similar to our emotions, regardless to what they relate.
As a matter of fact, your sexual preferences are your thing. However, everybody judges others – maybe most often when it comes to sexuality. In fact, always and everywhere. Why would sexuality be different? Making conclusions on the basis of skin color should not say anything about an individual’s characteristics. But it does. Similar to height, the color of hair, the colour of eyes, etc. With race, it is alarming that the characteristics of a person are connected with stereotypical images and generalizations which result from lack of knowledge.
Respect for difference is the path to better mutual understanding and the genuine acceptance of all the colors of the rainbow.
