Sex Life of the Elderly Can Be Surprisingly Active
American research showed that 70-year-olds are quite sexually active. Two thirds of them have intercourse twice a month. So what can we make of the sex life of the elderly?
The elderly are much more active than we usually presume! (jlp)
Most Americans remain sexually active until they reach the age of 60 and half of them even carry on until they are 70-year-olds. These results were provided by large all-American research on sexuality among elderly people.
A great number of the elderly admit that despite their sexual activity they experience great difficulties with reduced sexual lust and
problems with erection.
It's reassuring to find out that one can have an active and satisfying sex life far into old age. (jlp)
The research study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, is based on interviews with 3000 Americans aged between 57 and 85. The respondents trusted the researchers and told them about every detail of their sex lives.
Although male sexual problems of a mechanical nature are harder to handle than female ones, research has found that women after 60 are less active than men. The higher percentage of women was single and, more often than men, they said they didn't find any pleasure in sex.
Sex can make you feel younger. (jlp)
In general, it is considered that the elderly hardly have sex after the age of 60 or that they do not have it at this age at all. Research demonstrates, however, that sex is still a significant part of the life of the elderly.
How did they carry out research?
In a two-hour interview, the researchers of the University of Chicago asked Americans from all the federal states the questions about their sexual life and their health practices.
The study, which was partly financed by the National Health Institute, demonstrated that 84% of the elderly men aged between 57 and 64 had sex at least once in the previous year. There were somewhat less sexually active women at this age (62%). The percentage of men has been halved to 38% and the percentage of women to 17% for the elderly who are sexually active after the age of 75.
Among the elderly who are in their 70s and are still sexually active, two thirds have sex at least twice a month, while in their 80s, half the people have sex at least twice a month. If there were no problems with erection, lubrication, hips, health in general and, of course, sexual desire, the percentage would be even higher!
