Eleanor Roosevelt was not happy with her marriage to Franklin, who was her distant cousin. While he paid more attention to his career and his secretaries, she gave birth to six of their children, but they didn't divorce because of his political reputation.
President's wife in a lesbian relationship
After her husband's affair with Lucy Mercer, Eleanor Roosevelt came to conclusion that she is responsible for her own happiness and started to devote more of her time to politics. As a strong and confident woman she set an example for many other women who tried to establish themselves in 'male' jobs. A year before her husband's presidential mandate, Eleanor met a journalist Lorena Hickok, with whom she remained closely connected for the rest of her life and presumably has a lesbian relationship with.
Their personal correspondence was open to public only in the late 1970s, and their letters clearly show that they both had deep romantic feelings for one another. At the first presidential inauguration, she wore a ring that Lorena gave her, and for which she thanked her in the letter: ''Your ring is a deep consolation for me. I look at it and think: She really loves me, otherwise I wouldn't have it.''
