Does Intercourse Before a Match Decrease One's Strength?

Do we benefit from intercourse before a match or does sex decrease our strength? Sportsmen and coaches seem to have different opinions on the subject.

The former manager of the German football team didn't agree at all with his players having intercourse before a match during the World Cup. Berti Vogts didn't allow his players in 1994 to have pre-match sex and also ordered that the wives of the players mustn't stay in the same hotel as them. No wonder that Elf lost in the quarter-finals to Bulgaria …

On the other hand, former athlete Linford Christie praised having sex prior to performing on the sports field. Intercourse made his feet lighter, he claimed. It's unclear, though, whether his Olympic and World Championship gold medals were the result of pre-match sex or illegal substances, the abuse of which brought him a two-year suspension (as all the rest, he too claimed to have never used any of illegal substances).

Canadian psychologist Ian Shrirer has this to say on intercourse before a match: "The night before has no effect on strength or endurance or any of the physical abilities of the athletes. A lot of people think it has to do with the psychological effects, but no research has been made in this field so far."

Israeli psychologist Alexander Olshanietzky, who studies the effects pre-match sex has on women, disagrees to some extent. He believes that women achieve better results after reaching an orgasm: "We believe that a woman gets better results in a sports competition after orgasm. Especially high jumpers and runners. The more orgasms, the more chances of winning a medal. Coaches generally tell their athletes to abstain before competition. In the case of women, that’s the wrong advice." According to the Israeli expert, men shouldn't have pre-match sex.

As a sidenote: at the Olympic Games in Athens, 130000 condoms and 30000 lubricants were distributed among the sportsmen, so it seems that the sex life of the latter must have been quite lively also between the competitions.
