The myth of Catherine the Great and horses

The popular myth about the death of Catherine II. Alekseyevna, known also as Catherine the Great, says that she died due to injuries while attempting to have sexual intercourse with one of her horses. Supposedly, a harness mechanism with which a woman can strap herself on a horse broke. However, it is not known how these malicious rumours started. The other myth about her death says that she died on the toilet when the seat broke under the weight of her body and inflicted such severe wounds on her that the poor woman died. Of course, this theory does not hold water as well. Catherine died in her bed on 6 November 1796 after having a severe stroke.

Catherine the Great was not without sins

Both previous myths have the tendency to humiliate and embarrass a person by linking the person to obscure sexual practices. Naturally, Catherine the Great was not without sins. She disposed of her husband with the help of her lover and she had several children with different men. At the same time, she was one of the most advanced Russian rulers, she was highly educated, she introduced a number of reforms, and she was in correspondence with the top of the intellectual community in Europe at that time, for example Voltaire, Diderot and d'Alembert. No matter how important she was during her lifetime, she could not prevent the spreading of rumours posthumously, which tarnished her death.
