During and after menopause women face numerous psychological and physical problems which can be solved with the help of modern medicine. One of the important areas that menopause affects is also sex life. After menopause a lot of women feel a severe pain during sexual intercourse which often prevents them from having sex. In the past, there was not much emphasis placed on this problem because women did not live long enough. In 1900, for example, women died on average at the age of 51 and did not have to face problems related to menopause.

What is the cause of pain in sexual intercourse after menopause?

In women after menopause, the level of estrogen drops and consequently it causes the dryness of vagina and thinning of its tissue which is what actually causes the pain. If you lack estrogen, the easiest solution is to use lubricants (preferably based on water). However, the most effective way to fight against dryness of your vagina is estrogen or hormone replacement therapy.

Does hormone replacement therapy improve intercourse after menopause?

Experts share very different views on hormone replacement therapy. Women are also skeptical about the oral form of taking estrogen or hormone replacement therapy, since one of the studies conducted in 2002 showed there is a close connection between hormone replacement therapy and breast cancer. However, as said earlier, the opinions of experts differ considerably. Some experts believe that the concept of the research was wrong and that the risk of developing cancer is low if the dose of estrogen is correct. Therefore, it is best if you talk to your doctor about the pain you feel during sexual intercourse and you will find the appropriate solution together. Do not tolerate the pain or stop having sex because intercourse has a number of positive effects on your health – in ripe age as well.
