In 1939, approximately seventy years ago, a Peruvian village was shaken by a strange childbirth. A girl named Lina gave birth to a healthy boy when she was only five years and seven months old. Her physique of a five-year-old did not allow for a natural birth, so she had to do it with the help of a caesarean section. The world’s youngest mother began to mature at a very early age. When she was three, she got her first period and her breasts started to grow when she was four.
Lina’s attitude towards her baby was befitting a five-year-old. She treated him like a younger brother, and he was raised by her parents. He found the truth about his mother when he was ten. Who the father was remains a secret because Lina never revealed his name. Her father and her mentally handicapped brother were accused, but there wasn't enough evidence to indict them.
Her puberty came several years too early, but this isn't an isolated incident. Even though she is the youngest person known to give childbirth, precocious puberty is not uncommon. Sexual maturity is caused by the brain. It can be a consequence of an illness or it can occur if the hormones go a bit crazy. Secondary sex characteristics develop, such as pubic hair and female breasts.

It's important to pay attention to premature puberty because it can be brought on by tumours. But this isn't the only reason. Secondary sex characteristics, such as the full development of the breasts, may be a lure for paedophiles. Despite the signs of sexually developed body, we are talking about a person whose psychophysical development is at the child stage, which means that this child trusts adults, who may misuse this trust.
What are the signs of premature puberty?
Precocious puberty is exhibited with boys by the growth of pubic hair and sexual organs before reaching nine years of age and also the development of the chest area before pubic hair appears. With girls, premature puberty is exhibited by pubic hair which appears before eight years of age and breasts which develop before the girl turns seven, as well as by the period, which first happens before the girl turns ten.
According to her doctor, Lina's early puberty was triggered by the hypophysis not functioning correctly. Despite all the unwanted attention she received, something positive also came out of it. During her eleven month stay in the hospital she learned how to read and write. The girl was also invited to join various events where she would be presented as a freak of nature, but she turned all these invitations down.
Nature doesn't make freaks, but thrives on versatility and diversity. It's people who make freaks.
