Too deep cleavage
Fashion designer Ricardo Oyarzun has sparked outrage in South America because he dressed up his models as the Virgin Mary with very deep and seductive cleavage. Even the Roman Catholic Church condemned his actions. Naturally, Ricardo Oyarzun defends himself and explains: “There is no pornography here, there's no sex, there are no virgins menstruating or feeling each other up. This is artistic expression.” Moreover, he’s convinced that models don’t represent Virgin Mary at all, but the designs were only inspired by the holy icon, which shouldn’t receive so much negative publicity. The church representative said in a statement: “We look on with special pain and deplore those acts which seek to tarnish manifestations of sincere love toward the Virgin Mary, which end up striking at the dignity of womankind by presenting her as an object of consumption.”
A similar thing also happened with the cover of the Mexican edition of Playboy, where the image of the Virgin Mary was also controversial.
Similar scandal by Playboy
A few months ago, there was a similar scandal created by the cover of the Mexican edition of Playboy magazine that published an almost nude model resembling the Virgin Mary. Moreover, the headline read in Spanish: “We Love You, Maria.” Therefore, this was controversy and very daring provocation that offended the public and Church authorities. The editors of the Mexican Playboy apologised later and admitted to making a mistake and explained that they had no intention to offend anyone. “The image is not and never was intended to portray the Virgin of Guadalupe or any other religious figure. The intent was to reflect a Renaissance-like mood on the cover.” The Catholic Church did accept their apology, but there’s still a bitter aftertaste that soiled the figure of the Virgin Mary.
