Lesbos wants lesbians to itself
Residents of the Greek island of Lesbos launched a legal action against a homosexual group, insisting that only islanders had the right to call themselves lesbians.
The inhabitants of the island said they were attempting to ban the Greek association of homosexuals from bearing the name ‘lesbian’, claiming true lesbians are found only on Lesbos.
The island Lesbos, nowadays a very popular tourist resort, was the home of the poetess Sapfo in the 6 century B.C. Her poems celebrate the love for another woman. Same sex-role orientated women were then named ‘lesbians’ after the island.
Residents of Lesbos now suffer ‘psychological and moral rape’ from the ‘seizure’ of their island's name by the homosexuals, according to the plaintiffs. This being the reason they want the court in Athens to rule. The Greek association of the homosexuals OLKE has already labeled the lawsuit ‘absolutely hilarious’. However, they will respond to the appeal of the court if it comes to a hearing.
