We finally got the verdict to one of the most bizarre cases in recent history. The inhabitants of Lesbos lost the suit.

Where did lesbians get their name from?
Lesbos was not named after lesbians, but the other way round. Now everyone naturally connects everything on Lesbos with lesbians and this is really starting to upset the locals. They filed a lawsuit and got a lot of media attention. Publisher Dimitris Lamrou filed the lawsuit because the human rights of the islanders have supposedly been violated. Their names have been smeared, so he demanded that the name Lesbians should not be used in any other way than to name the inhabitants of Lesbos.

How did Lesbos’s lawsuit end?
The role of the defendant was taken up by members of the Greek lesbian and gay community. The court ruled in their favour. The word lesbian does not define the islanders’ identity, so there is no just cause for the islanders to feel offended. The lawyer for OLKE told Reuters: „This is a good decision for lesbians all over the world.“ The court made the plaintiffs pay the court costs. So, they will have to pay 230 Euros, unless they file an appeal.
Who should sue whom?
We are used to all sorts of things, strange sentences and worse verdicts. This verdict was a good one in the name of common sense. Imagine that all the people with offensive last names would team up and sue the country and demand that the meaning of their last name should be changed. Would the Turks want to stop the use of the word turkey in the English language? The absurdity of such a lawsuit is evident at first glance. With lesbians, it gets a bit complicated. The word lesbian has no negative connotations, or to put it another way, many people fight that this would be the case. That someone takes offence at being called a lesbian is foolish. If you are a lesbian, someone has made a determination of your sexual orientation. If you are not a lesbian, you are either from the island Lesbos and thus named after where you live, or the person was wrong about your sexual orientation, which is not offensive, merely wrong. You can only get offended by the word lesbian if you give it negative connotations, no matter what the other speaker says. If anyone could sue anyone, it could be the lesbians suing the plaintiffs for sexual discrimination.
