It Gets Better - Even for LGBT Teenagers!
A suicide of a teenager in distress has inspired a world-wide project, with the purpose to show that life gets better with time.
Dan Savage and his husband have decided to help young people in distress and started a project called It Gets Better on Youtube, which has received a lot of attention.
Dan Savage, an editor and a columnist from Seattle founded the project It Gets Better, with the purpose to help teenagers with homosexual, bisexual or transgender orientation. The project It Gets Better was founded as a video channel on YouTube website, where grown-up LGBT persons (lesbians, gays, bisexual, transgender/transsexual persons) post their encouraging videos and explain that life gets easier and better with time. Many stars have also responded, for example the comedian Sarah Silverman, who angrily stated that the American culture and upbringing is to blame for the suicides of teenagers.
90 % of teenagers with same-sex orientation are victims of violence
Project It Gets Better was founded as a response to a suicide of a 15-year old Billy Lucas from Indiana, who was a victim of harassment and violence because of his homosexual orientation. This is not a single case and there have been many rumors about the suicides of teenagers with a homosexual orientation in the US. Especially in remote, rural areas where the social atmosphere is very homophobic and there are no LGBT organizations present, talk or self-help groups, that could help LGBT teenagers, who are victims of violence. Dan Savage emphasizes that every ninth out of ten teenagers with a homosexual orientation experiences violence at school, which includes psychical, verbal and physical violence.
It Gets Better video channel already has more than 14.000 subscribers
Savage, the founder of the project It Gets Better, says that the purpose is to show that life can be full, beautiful and rich for LGTB teenagers as well. »Single people, couples, with children, without children, well-known or unknown, urban, rural, of all religions, races and social backgrounds - you are all welcome to explain to teenagers such as Billy Lucas that life gets better,« explains Savage.
