1. Sperm Fact: Semen vs. sperm

Some people still don't know that sperm is not the same as semen or more precisely, that semen contains many other things besides sperm. Sperm is used to denote male reproductive cells used to fertilize a female egg, while semen is a liquid that contains and enables sperm to spread. Not to be mistaken, the sperm and semen are ejaculated at the same time, or in other words semen is the liquid that carries sperm. Idiot's Guide to Amazing Sex explains: » Imagine sperm as a little happy surfer and the semen as a wave who has to catch the sperm in order to jump inside the vagina.«

2. Sperm fact: Discovery of sperm

Sperm was discovered by Anton van Leeuwenhoek in 1600. He invented microscope and then used it to examine his semen. He wrote in his notes that the sperm cells in his seminal liquid look like they are fighting among themselves, and this opinion is still present today. If you saw the comedy Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex which was shot by Woody Allen in the 1970s, then you surely remember the episode where Woody plays one of the sperm cells before the ejaculation. Enough with the jokes, sperm is a male sexual cell and therefore it presents half of the genetic reproductive equation. Men produce sperm for their whole life from adolescence on, while women produce eggs only until they reach menopause. The production of sperm lasts for about seventy days. Then it mixes with semen which is produced by the prostate gland.

3. Sperm fact: How many calories does sperm contain?

Semen contains only a few sperm cells, even less than one percent, but apparently enough to successfully fertilize a woman. Semen is full of healthy substances, for example nitrates, vitamins, minerals, sugar, proteins and amino-acid which protects the sperm from the acid in vagina. Some people believe that sperm is harmful for a woman if a man ejaculates into her mouth. Semen doesn't contain many calories, only from ten to fifty calories per ejaculation. But on the other hand, sperm is the main transmitter of sexually transmitted diseases. A man who doesn't have enough sperm is infertile and the same goes for men who have the so called lazy sperm where the sperm cells are not able to swim far enough and successfully fertilize the egg. One ejaculation contains up to 500 millions of sperm cells, but the number decreases with every following ejacualtion on the same day. If you and your partner want to get pregnant, it is therefore recommendable to have intercourse only every two days, so that the sperm has enough time for reproduction.
